Level 2 Home Charger
A dedicated 240V circuit and a wall-mounted charger, sized to your panel, your car, and Wheaton's wiring rules.
Residential Charging
Outdoor and driveway EV charger installation puts a weather-rated charger on an exterior wall, a post, or a detached garage. The enclosure should carry a NEMA 3R or NEMA 4 rating. In Wheaton, underground runs go in conduit, and someone must call JULIE to mark buried utilities before any digging starts.
An outdoor charger fits many Wheaton homes. Consider one if:
An outdoor install typically includes:
The Process
Call and describe where you park, how far the spot is from the panel, and whether a detached garage is involved.
A licensed local electrician walks the route, checks the panel, and picks a mounting spot. The plan covers trench depth, conduit type, and where the cable will hang.
The electrician reviews your setup and gives you a written quote showing the charger rating, conduit and trench length, and permit.
Before digging, the electrician contacts JULIE, Illinois's 811 one-call service, to mark buried utilities. The City of Wheaton electrical permit is filed at the same stage.
Conduit goes in the trench, the charger is mounted, and the City inspects the work. Then you plug in and run a full session in the driveway.
Cost Factors
Outdoor jobs vary with distance and digging. National cost guides put the typical range for each piece as shown, not as a Wheaton quote.
$800 to $2,500typical range
Covers a short run to a wall near the panel.
$1,500 to $3,500typical range
Applies when a detached garage feed or a large charger exceeds what the existing service can carry.
Long trenches, boring under a driveway, and a garage subpanel add cost. Ask for these items line by line, and see installation cost factors.
ComEd stopped taking 2026 applications for its home charger rebate in the spring, with no waitlist, and plans to run the program through 2028, so look for the next opening on comed.com. Eligible setups pair a smart, ENERGY STAR certified Level 2 charger with a ComEd-approved installer and three years on a time-of-day or hourly rate. The federal Section 30C credit is expired for chargers placed in service after June 30, 2026.
Permits, Code, and Safety
Outdoor chargers follow the 2023 NEC, which Wheaton enforces, plus local wiring limits. Key points:
Equipment outdoors must suit wet locations. NEMA 3R covers rain, sleet, and ice, while NEMA 4 also resists hose-directed water.
Wheaton limits UF and NM cable to temporary wiring. Permanent underground circuits run in conduit, buried at the depths set in NEC Table 300.5.
An outdoor EV receptacle needs GFCI protection and a weatherproof cover that stays closed with the plug inserted. Hardwired units skip the plug entirely. See permits and inspections for what the inspector checks.
Illinois law requires a locate request through JULIE before excavation. Marked lines keep the trench clear of gas mains and buried power cables.
Local Notes
Wheaton winters bring stretches below zero, heavy snow, and plenty of road salt. Salt spray and slush off the car can corrode cheap fittings. Mount the charger high enough to clear drifts and the snow you pile off the driveway.
Detached garages are common in older Wheaton neighborhoods near downtown and on the Northside. Feeding one means a trench across the yard or a bore under the driveway, with conduit the whole way. Many of these homes also have 60 to 100 amp service, so the panel upgrade page is worth a read first. Newer homes in the Danada area and other south-side subdivisions usually have attached garages, which keeps outdoor runs short.
If you live in West Chicago, Winfield, or Carol Stream, the same JULIE rule applies, but each town has its own permit office. A charger that quits after a cold snap or a salty month may need service, so see EV charger repair and troubleshooting. Business owners with parking lots should look at commercial and workplace EV charging.

FAQ
Straight answers about outdoor EV charger installation in Wheaton and nearby DuPage County towns.
Yes. Many chargers are rated NEMA 3R or NEMA 4 for outdoor use. Your electrician mounts it on a wall or post, runs the circuit in conduit, and gets the City permit. A Level 2 home charger works the same way outdoors.
Yes. Illinois requires a JULIE locate request before digging, and dialing 811 is one way to make it. Buried gas, water, power, and cable lines get marked so the trench can avoid them.
Not for permanent wiring. Wheaton's local amendments restrict UF and NM cable to temporary use. Underground charger circuits run in conduit instead.
A charger rated for outdoor use handles Illinois winters well. Hang the cable on a holder so it stays out of snow and salt.
You can, with a weather-rated box, a cover that seals with the plug in, and GFCI protection. Many owners prefer a hardwired outdoor unit so no plug sits in the weather. See the NEMA 14-50 outlet page for the trade-offs.
