Level 2 Home Charger
A dedicated 240V circuit and a wall-mounted charger, sized to your panel, your car, and Wheaton's wiring rules.
Service Area
A railroad city with a historic Main Street, City permits under the 2020 NEC, and a mix of older and newer homes.
West Chicago grew up around Turner Junction, a rail crossing named for John B. Turner. Trains still shape the place: the Metra Union Pacific West station sits on Main Street in the historic downtown, a few miles west of Wheaton.
Unlike its neighbors, West Chicago is a city, not a village, and it runs its own Building Division. Housing ranges from older homes near downtown to newer subdivisions, so charger plans here vary from street to street.
Services
Many West Chicago drivers pick a Level 2 home charger or a Tesla Wall Connector for the garage. East of town, Winfield follows the newer 2023 code.
A dedicated 240V circuit and a wall-mounted charger, sized to your panel, your car, and Wheaton's wiring rules.
Tesla's hardwired charger on a circuit of up to 60A, set up for your panel, your parking spot, and City of Wheaton permits.
A load calculation first, then a service upgrade or load management, so your panel can carry an EV charger safely.
A weather-rated charger on an exterior wall, post, or detached garage, wired in conduit to stand up to Wheaton winters.
Breaker trips, GFCI faults, heat damage, cold-weather glitches, and app problems, sorted into safe checks and electrician work.
Level 2 banks and DC charging stations for offices, retail, churches, and apartment lots, planned around power and parking.
Apply with the Building Division of the City's Community Development Department at 475 Main Street. The City lists office hours of Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Inspections run through a separate line, (630) 818-3344. The City asks for 24 hours or one business day of notice, plus the permit number and inspection type.
A West Chicago mailing address does not settle the question. Some 60185 addresses sit outside city limits in unincorporated DuPage County, and those homes do not go through the City.
West Chicago enforces the 2020 National Electrical Code under Ordinance 23-O-0029. Wheaton is one edition newer, on the 2023 NEC. Each edition updates rules for GFCI protection, outdoor equipment, and labels, so a plan drawn for Wheaton may need small changes here.
The basics hold steady: its own circuit for the charger, wire and breaker rated for continuous use, and a final inspection before you plug in. The permits and inspections guide explains each stage.
Contractors register with the City before a permit is issued, filing a certificate of insurance that names the City and a $10,000 surety bond. Electricians show a license from the Illinois municipality where they passed the exam.
Homeowners may generally do their own work under a permit, but the City reserves electrical service upgrades for licensed electricians. A charger that needs a service or panel upgrade falls in that group. An EV readiness inspection tells you early whether yours will.
Homes near the historic downtown may have smaller service and detached garages. A driveway charger on a pedestal can shorten the run. If an existing unit acts up, start with repair and troubleshooting.
Main Street businesses can explore commercial and workplace charging for customers and staff. Kline Creek Farm, the 1890s living-history farm run by the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County, sits near the city.
